The Big Sandy Area and Community Action Program has selected its 2023 Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) scholarship recipients.
The CSBG scholarship is an annual scholarship that’s given to qualifying students in BSACAP’s five service areas: Johnson, Martin, Magoffin, Floyd, and Pike. Ten scholarships worth $500 are awarded to the students to assist them in their pursuit of higher education. The amount may be greater than intended if there are less than ten recipients, but no award should be less than $500.
Our 2023 recipients also wrote essays in which they described their career goals and how this scholarship would help them achieve them.
Without further ado, BSACAP would like to congratulate its 2023 CSBG scholarship recipients:

- Magoffin County’s Macie Arnett will be pursuing a degree in criminal justice. After obtaining her degree, she will be the first in her family to have done so! After college, “I hope to return to my hometown to work with the public within my community,” Arnett says.
- Magoffin County’s Andrew Hunt will be pursuing a degree in the arts. Creating designs and characters is something that Hunt has always been passionate about. Hunt says, “I want a career that allows me to enjoy what I do and allows me to use my creativity and talent every day.”
- Floyd County’s Kolby Lawson will be pursuing a degree in political science. Lawson says he possesses a “deep-rooted desire” towards contributing to positive change and advocating for social justice; more specifically, providing quality healthcare for elderly patients.
- Johnson County’s Layla Minix will be pursuing a degree in nursing. As Minix reaches for her goals, she’s cheered on by her #1 supporter: her daughter! “She is my motivation to succeed,” Minix says, “I want to give her, and myself, the best life I possibly can.”
- Pike County’s Kalista Mitchell will be pursuing a degree in psychology. Mitchell says, “Because of my own mental health journey, I would like to help others using my education and my own experience.” Mitchell emphasizes providing those in rural areas with the mental healthcare they need.
- Pike County’s Raegan Mitchell will be pursuing a degree in special education. Teaching is something that Mitchell has always been passionate about, and Mitchell says she’s most excited to see how she can positively impact her students.
- Magoffin County’s Chaseton Rowe will be pursuing a degree in electrical technology. After obtaining his degree, he’ll be the first in his family to have done so! After graduation, Rowe dreams of moving back home and becoming an electrician. “I believe in giving back to my community by helping others,” Rowe says.
